There are three types of brake that I have on my bikes. They are dual pivot caliper brakes, wide profile cantilever brakes and vee brakes. I use them because they give sufficient stopping power for transport cycling, they are problem free, they are compatible with the easily available brake levers, they are relatively simple to set up and the brake pads are inexpensive.
The performance of any rim brake is determined to a great extent by the brake pads. Softer pads stop the bike more quickly, because a soft rubber compound creates more friction between the brake and the wheel rim. Soft brake pads wear down more quickly than hard ones. While this may seem like a disadvantage, it isn’t because it results in less wear to the rim, meaning your wheels last longer. The leading brand of brake pad is KoolStop.
