Fixed gear

A bike with only one gear whose rear sprocket is not a freewheel. The rider cannot coast while their feet are on the pedals, they have to keep pedalling while the bike is moving. An advantage is that the rider can make the bike slow down just by pedalling slower, giving the ability to control speed with a high degree of accuracy. Also known as ‘fixed wheel’ (American), ‘fixed’ and ‘fixie’.
